1. STOP - Stay on the scene of the accident. D​riving away from the scene is never a smart move.
2. PROTECT THE SCENE- You can prevent further accidents by keeping your flashers on or setting up flares. If it is dark and your lights don't work, you can use a flashlight to keep your safe while you are waiting in your car or by the side of the road.
3. CALL THE POLICE- You should always call the police even if there are no serious injuries. You may need a police report to file a claim with your insurance company.
4. MAKE AN ACCURATE RECORD - Make sure that you tell the police exactly what happen, to the best of your ability. If you do not know certain aspects or don't remember, tell that to the officer. Do not speculate, guess or misstate any fact. If their is any WHITNESS make sure they give their information to the police so they cab be contacted latter if need it.
5. TAKE PICTURES - You should take pictures with your phone or a camera for any visible damage to all the vehicles involve in the accident including your vehicle. If the vehicles haven't been move, you should take a picture of the scene when possible. Make sure that you also take pictures of any visible injuries that you may suffer.
6. EXCHANGE INFORMATION - Typically the investigating officer obtains this information, however if the police do not respond to the accident, you should obtain the name, address, phone number, and their car insurance information of all the persons involved in the accident. If there are witnesses, you should get information from them too.
7. REPORT THE ACCIDENT TO YOUR CAR INSURANCE - You should call your car insurance and notify what happen. They will get your information and normally, they will provide you with a claim number that later will be use to claim your PIP benefits and treatment.
8. SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION - Some injuries causes by motor vehicle accidents are not immediately apparent. Most people rep[ort felling the most pain a day or two following an car accident. You should seek medical attention at your nearest medical facility or primary doctor. Even in accidents involving minor impact you should be examined to make sure that their is no hidden injuries that will manifest later on.
9. KEEP A FILE - Keep all your car accident related documents together. This information can include your claim number, police report, names, phone numbers of all the contacts that you have talk and may need in the future.
10. PROTECT YOUR RIGHTS - -You should contact an attorney. Your attorney can protect your rights. Your attorney can advise you on issues ranging from how to make sure you are fully compensated for your vehicle and the damages caused to your person after the car accident.
